Better Watch Out DVD Review

The Premise
When you think the suburbs, you think safety, but this holiday night the suburbs are anything but safe. Ashley (Olivia DeJonge) thought this babysitting job was going to be an easy night, but the night takes a turn when dangerous intruders break in and terrorize her and the twelve-year-old boy, Luke (Levi Miller), she's caring for. Ashley defends her charge to the best of her ability only to discover this is no normal home invasion.

The Review
It is always cool when a horror comedy film comes along that can still give you some surprises along the way. Films that keep you guessing who the good and bad people are and who you should be afraid of. This is one of those films and for the most part a pretty good horror flick along the way.

While some of the happenings fit the concept of a horror film, the focus that a lot of the horrific content happens off screen and therefore fits better in the classic horror/thriller genre. I do enjoy it when a film maker plays to the concept that in general we can imagine much worse than thy can show us on screen. Add to that the raft of great comedic moments and you have a film that is something kind of cool and creepy along the way.

While the film begins with plenty of throw backs to the Home Alone franchise, the film then takes the idea into a whole new direction. Refreshing and rather entertaining in many ways. Lead actor Levi Miller has done a solid job of bringing a rather complex character for a teenager. This isn’t too much of a surprise based on his interesting career so far including the Red Dog Prequel and Pan. In fact when you add in Ed Oxenbould you have a strong Australian connection to this film, plus of course being filmed in Australia and you have quiet the Ozzie thing happening, even though it is set and styled as an American horror film.

The Verdict
Pretty entertaining with some fun twists and turns and plenty of horror with a splattering of laughs along the way.
