Ferdinand hits Bullseye!
You have to love the time and effort that film-makers put into creating something for the whole family. If you enjoyed some of Blue Sky’s other animated hits (Dream Big, Rio and Epic) then you will not be disappointed with their Christmas offering this year.
Ferdinand, directed by Brazilian Director Carlos Saldanha (Ice Age: The Meltdown) is a colourful and satirical story set in the world of prize bull fighting. The main concept is that Ferdinand does not want to be a fighter but rather something unexpectedly and completely different.
As I was watching this film I found my mind wandering to those Billy Elliot (2000) scenes where he takes his first tentative steps into the realm of ballet and pondering the puzzle that is nature versus nurture.
My children were somewhat unsure how life would turn out for our hero the bull as both the lighter and darker sides of his journey unfolded. This unease helped the audience connect with the bull as he was propelled full speed across Spain with a crazy gang of companions. As an aside you will either love or hate the Goat!
The script is good and there are plenty of laughs for both kids and adults as well as some terrific darker scenes. The voices were strong and although I did not recognise John Cena during the screening I did think he was excellent as Ferdinand
