Why Him? Reviewed By Jess Wooton

The Premise
Over the holidays, Ned (Bryan Cranston), an overprotective but loving dad and his family visit his daughter at Stanford, where he meets his biggest nightmare: her well-meaning but socially awkward Silicon Valley billionaire boyfriend, Laird (James Franco). The rivalry develops, and Ned's panic level goes through the roof when he finds himself lost in this glamorous high-tech world and learns that Laird is about to pop the question.
The Review
Going in, I couldn’t have predicted the stitches of laughter I would be dealing with throughout the majority of this movie. The film expertly masters the absurd, ridiculous comedy style that it’s striving for, while also bringing surprisingly heartwarming moments into the mix.

The characterisation provided by the actors is a large part of why this worked. James Franco stepped into the complex role of Laird and made him feel like a somewhat ridiculous, but very real person. The film does a great job at making you sympathise with both halves of the ‘rivalry’ it presents.

Megan Mullally as Barb Fleming was also a standout, with her expert comedic timing and ability to steal a scene and take it to the next level. Overall, it’s the type of film where you leave the theatre still smiling and laughing—and we need those types of films in 2016.
The Verdict
If you’re looking for a way to de-stress this holiday season, ‘Why Him?’ is the film to see. Clever, absurd,
heartwarming, hilarious, and festive. I would highly recommend it.
