Francisco The Man Behind The Pope DVD Review

DVD Review by Cathy Jenke

The Premise
A look at the life of Jorge Mario Bergoglio, from his early childhood days in Argentina to his becoming Pope Francis.

The Review
A fascinating movie on the life of Pope Francis starting from the time of his teenage years in Buenos Aires where he first received his calling to the priesthood though until his election to the Papacy in 2013.

The opening scenes by means of a bus tour provide some facts on the papacy and Pope Francis, that could be helpful for those not familiar with the Catholic Church

Through the eyes of a Vatican journalist, Ana, who is an agnostic, the audience is introduced to the various personalities, communities and events that have shaped Pope Francis, who in turn nurtured and shaped countless others who crossed his path.

Pope Francis or Father Jorge as he always insisted on being called regardless of his ecclesial status, is portrayed effortlessly by Darío Grandinetti in an engaging performance that gives Father Jorge character and credibility,

Grandinetti does justice in his challenging role of portraying Father Jorge as a man of deep conviction, humility and a man who is very much a shepherd of his people.

The film is sprinkled with quiet delightful humour and through engaging dialogue in this English subtitled film the story of Pope Francis is brought to life.

The Verdict
A moving and inspiring movie that will delight and fascinate those who are intrigued with Pope Francis.
