JOY is the wild true story of Joy Mangano and her Italian-American family across four generations centered on the girl who becomes the woman who founds a business dynasty by inventing the Miracle Mop and becomes a matriarch in her own right. Betrayal, treachery, the loss of innocence and the scars of love, pave the road in this intense emotional and human comedy about becoming a true boss of family and enterprise facing a world of unforgiving commerce. Allies become adversaries and adversaries become allies, both inside and outside the family, as Joy's inner life and fierce imagination carry her through the storm she faces. Jennifer Lawrence stars, with Robert De Niro, Bradley Cooper, Edgar Ramirez, Isabella Rossellini, Diane Ladd, and Virginia Madsen. Like David O. Russell's previous films, Joy defies genre to tell a story of family, loyalty, and love.
So here we have another one of those Erin Brokovich styled films that tells the tale of a woman with everything against her who rises up to overcome the naysayers in order to make something of herself. It is the trial and error along the way that makes this story something rather cool to watch. There is no surprise that director David O Russell utilizes some of the same old tried and true cinematic tricks to bring this story to fruition. For some viewers, this will seem a little tired and yet for the bulk of the audience this will work and make the film enjoyable.
Jennifer Lawrence is something really special in a world of over the top diva actresses. When you see her in action on the screen playing some good roles and then follow it up with her interview appearances on all the talk shows, you certainly realise that she doesn’t take herself and her success all that seriously. For her role in Joy, she had some great source material to be able to draw from in regards to the real Joy Mangano. (Historical Spoiler--- An Italian-American inventor and entrepreneur known for inventions such as the self-wringing Miracle Mop and Huggable Hangers. She is the President of Ingenious Designs, and appears regularly on US television shopping channel HSN. A graduate of Pace University, Mangano holds more than 100 patents for her inventions.)
Russell obviously know how to get the best out of his cast. Under his direction, Robert De Niro, Bradley Cooper, and Jennifer Lawrence have all been nominated for Academy Awards. Lawrence even won for Silver Linings Playbook. Here there is a lot of use of narration and several really cheesy moments that ham it up but not in a comedic manner, however I think that the general cinema going public will love it. While critics will most probably get more annoyed by it. This is a feel good film at which you will have moments when you don’t feel good and yet the outcome and direction of the story is worth the struggle.
A really good and pretty well told true story of another super strong woman overcoming the dickheads of this world in a bid to better her situation. Well worth a trip to the movies.
