The Divergent Series: Allegiant Film Review

Film Review by Cam Eagle

The Premise
After the earth-shattering revelations of INSURGENT, Tris and Four must escape beyond the wall, leaving the only city and family they have ever known. Once outside, old discoveries are quickly rendered meaningless with the revelation of a new reality. Tris and Four must quickly decide who they can trust as they are forced to make choices about courage, allegiance, sacrifice and love.

The Review
Allegiances are challenged as the trials begin for those under Janine’s régime. Tris and Four leave the growing discontent behind and make their escape beyond Chicago’s wall.

Shocking new truths await leaving them question whether the outside world is heading in the right direction or whether life in the Bureau, bordering the fringe is a case of history repeating. Four’s question of Evelyn (Naomi Watts) echoes this theme; “Why did you go to war with Janine if you were just going to become her?” When all is not as it seems Tris finds herself allegiant to those back home, especially when a ruthless battle ignites in Chicago which threatens all of humanity.

Despite the engaging power struggles, the faction-less villain, Edgar, didn’t have enough fight for me. Having said that, the main characters kept me gripped; which, in a movie where character development is scarce, is saying something.

There was an interesting spiritual overtone to the movie as David the Director seemed to have a God complex, seeking to emulate the pure and taking Tris to Providence.

While there was a resolution at the end, the door was left wide open for part 2, of which I am anticipating.

The Verdict
If you want action sequences with some betrayal and a plot that will hold your attention, then Allegiant is a must see. If you’re a fan of the series, you can’t go wrong with this chapter, however like some of these “part 1” of the third volume movies, it seemed a tiny bit padded out.

The Extras
Tris's hair was supposed to be chin length in Insurgent, so in Allegiant her hair is true to the book.

Filming was completed on August 22, 2015.

"Allegiant" will be split into two parts, making it the fourth movie franchise to do so, along with "Harry Potter", "The Twilight Saga" and "The Hunger Games".

We will be seeing Natalie Prior as a young girl in this movie.

Kate Winslet was so keen to return in any capacity as either a "flashback or simulation" that she got her agents to get in contact with producers to specify her availability. However it was the producers who turned down the opportunity for the sake of time and storyline constraints.
