Sleeping With Other People DVD Review

DVD Review by Andy Box

The Premise
A good-natured womanizer and a serial cheater form a platonic relationship that helps reform them in ways, while a mutual attraction sets in.
The Review
Is sleeping with other people good for relationships?

Jake and Lainey have known each other for years, and are very good friends, but they fear sex would ruin the friendship. Sound familiar?

Although billed as a comedy this movie is more of a romantic comedy drama in the mold of When Harry met Sally (1989) and to be fair there are aspects of the film that cover such a movie description.

Jason Sudeikis (Horrible Bosses) plays lovable rogue Jake who can’t keep and doesn’t really want to keep a girlfriend due to his womanizing. Opposite him is Alison Brie (Mad Men) who is having a long term affair with a doctor she met at University whilst also sleeping with lots of other people.

Long story short, Jake and Lainey meet at a sex addiction therapy group after hooking up at university years before. An agreement is reached that they will be there for each other but not have sex.

In other words friends with no benefits and thanks for not sharing!

There are funny moments and genuine drama all set in a beautifully shot New York City. Headland (About last Night) considering her age and experience has had a half decent crack at trying to imitate the elements that made When Harry met Sally a modern classic. Not an easy task for any Writer/Director and is possibly the genre that is the most difficult to get right.

However  the end product is a watchable and fun movie that has just enough on screen chemistry and quality writing to keep you engaged.

The Verdict
This movie will surprise you in that it will force you to look at your own relationships and is a good choice for your next date night.
