Ronaldo DVD Review

Film Review by Clayton Barnett

The Premise
Filmed over 14 months with unprecedented access into the inner circle of the man and the sport, this is the first official and fully authorized film of one of the most celebrated figures in football. For the first time ever, the world gets vividly candid and un-paralleled, behind-closed-doors access to the footballer, father, family-man and friend in this moving & fascinating documentary. Through in-depth conversations, state of the art football footage and never before seen archival footage, the film gives an astonishing insight into the sporting and personal life of double Ballon D'Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo at the peak of his career.

The Review
You know Cristiano Ronaldo is an extremely talented footballer, one of the greatest of our generation. You probably think he’s an arrogant self-centered dick too, and you’re not far off the truth.

But producer Asif Kapadia and BAFTA award-winning director Anthony Wonke go to a lot of effort to show the true, caring and humble Ronaldo, and it’s a fascinating watch. Kapadia knows how to get down to someone’s essence; he directed the brilliant Erton Senna and Amy Winehouse documentaries. And with the same use of home-movie footage, especially of his late father, you get an amazing insight into the genesis of god’s gift to football.

There’s still the fact he thinks, and at one time states, that same thing. But thank god for his little boy, also named Cristiano. The cute and charming child steals the entire documentary and makes Cristiano Snr the world’s greatest dad. The audience cracked up when junior tells senior that he’ll teach him how to take penalty kicks. And it’s touching when junior gets all shy meeting Lionel Messa backstage at the Ballon D’Or. It’s just a shame you can’t tell Cristiano what is real and what is playing up for the camera.

Even though we get unparalleled access we don’t get any startling revelation. We still don’t know who’s the mother of junior, nor how Cristiano even conceived him. It’s a pretty clean doco, no womanising, barely any drinking, and you feel Cristiano probably had final cut.

One thing for certain, if you’re a football fan, you’re in absolute heaven here. Outstanding footage rolls out again and again from CR7’s outstanding career, with the El Clasico grudge match between Real Madrid and Barcelona a highlight.

The Verdict
While the doco does a great job in revealing his origins, it could have dug deeper into Ronaldo’s personal life and what makes him tick. It’s hard to shake his arrogant persona, but his adorable kid sure makes you like god’s gift to football a little bit more.
