What We Did On Our Holiday
British comedy heart-warmer from the creators of BBC series Outnumbered. Doug (David Tennant), Abi (Rosamund Pike) and their three rug rats head to the Scottish Highlands for grandad's (Billy Connolly) birthday, whilst trying to keep their impending divorce a secret.
If you’ve ever watched the hilarious British sitcom Outnumbered (and if you haven’t do yourself a favour) then you'll know what you’re in for. The makers of that take the same mix of harassed parents and embarrassingly franmonom kids and send off to for more dysfunctional comedy. The writing directing on! of Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin are well known for getting adlib performances from the kids in Outnumbered and do the same with the three young stars here. While the adults have to stick to script the children have free reign and regularly steal the spotlight with unscripted gems.
Though it’s hard to on Billy Connolly, who is in great form as the elderly patriarch of the family. And it’s nice to see David Tennant and Rosamund Pike enjoying themselves in lighter fare - they both probably felt it was time for a comedy coming off Broadchurch and Gone Girl respectively.
It’s a shame though that the makers nail the comedy sides of things, balancing it quite nicely with the drama, but they just lay on the treacle a bit thick at the end. Plus while they’ve assembled an amazing cast, the production values come off a bit made-for-TV. Which is a shame for the stunning Scotland locations, which deserve the right cinematic treatment rather than quick dissolves from one to the next.
What We Did on Our Holidays retains the hilarious flavour of its Outnumbered origins but some of its flaws don’t hold up on the big screen. Though with Billy in fine form, and the kids an absolute hoot it’s still an entertaining outing.
