Get Hard Film Review

Film Review by Clayton Barnett
Get Hard
The Premise
When millionaire James King is nailed for fraud and bound for San Quentin, he turns to Darnell Lewis to prep him to go behind bars.
The Review
Will Ferrell teams up with Kevin Hart for the first time in the no-holds barred let's-train-for-prison movie Get Hard.
While 'Frank the Tank' is pretty popular in NZ, Kevin Hart isn't well-known, but boy he deserves to be. Hart's big state-side with comedies such as Think Like a Man and Ride Along, and he is hilarious playing the straight man for Ferrell absurd and clueless Wall Street stockbroker. The prison training scenes are worth admission alone. You'll never think of prison shanks in the same way. It's pretty paint by numbers from first time director Etan Cohen. Don't think one of the Coen brothers have gone mainstream, this is the screenwriter of Tropic Thunder and of all things Madagascar 2. Which is surprising since Get Hard is R16 and has full frontal penis. Not Ferrell's at least. Some might find the jokes pretty tasteless (there are a lot of gay and racist material) but if you’ve seen the red-band trailer you know what you’re in for.

There's a brilliant mental soundtrack too, from Chopin to Katy Perry to lil'Wayne (in fact there’s a lot of good hip-hop). And if you’re a fan of 90’s classic Boyz n the Hood, you'll appreciate Get Hard on another level. Plus let's not forget a cracking cameo from musicians John Mayer and T.I., and an incredibly hot Alison Brie as Will's trophy wife.
The Verdict
While Get Hard is pretty formulaic and crosses a lot of tasteless boundaries (full frontal penis and a lot of Ferrell’s ass), it’s good to see Will teaming up with someone new. But he should be careful as he’s almost upstaged by the motor-mouthed Kevin Hart.
